Hunting for HIV hideouts
False colored transmission EM of HIV cultured with human lymphocytes. In this month’s issue, 3 different articles investigate where and how HIV manages to replicate in the human body. On page 3256, Naarding et al. show that human breast milk produces a factor that inhibits viral transmission to CD4+ T cells and dendritic cells, while Beignon et al. (page 3265) show how HIV infects peripheral dendritic cells. Chun et al. (page 3250) describe how populations of HIV-1–infected cells can persist despite years of antiviral therapy.
